18 keys, 18 lives and 18 opportunities to start again.
When John Pudney first founded St Martin’s House nearly 60 years ago, he would be delighted – and perhaps shocked – at the progress we’ve made. From the way we work with people to recognising the complexity of their needs, we’ve come a long way. However, once he heard about the 18 Keys Project, he knew this was an equally radical and necessary step in the right direction.

The 18 Keys project is part of a wider plan to address women’s homelessness, an issue which has often been ignored.
We’re still developing our understanding of women’s homelessness and it’s cause. What we do know, however, is that for a woman fleeing domestic and sexual abuse, a roof could be a reminder and sign of impending violence – especially where men are present. Even though women may face stigma, addiction, exploitation and violence, they might feel safer rough sleeping than in an environment which reflects the trauma of their past.
By offering a safe and stable space for women sleeping rough, many may finally feel they have a place to recover, not just from life on the streets, but the psychological impact of what brought them there.
But 18 Keys will be more than just a safe space for women.
The project will use a trauma-informed approach to engage residents, building relationships and trust with no time constraints to prioritise wellbeing above all else. This is something many will be experiencing for the first time.
The new building will be carefully designed for women coming off the streets, who we know are likely to have complex support needs. Each resident will have their own key to privacy and sanctuary. And every aspect of the redevelopment will help women find the time, space and support they need to recover and become independent again.
As John discussed in his visit to the future 18 Keys site, women experiencing homelessness need more support and we must be there to provide it.
