World Homeless Day: how your social media can make a real difference
On World Homeless Day, we’re not just observing a statistic – we’re acknowledging the human beings behind a crisis that grips our city. In London alone, thousands of people sleep rough each night. We believe in the power of collective action, and that’s where you come in.
We’re coordinating a social media ‘takeover’ on World Homeless Day, Thursday 10th October, where we’re inviting you to simply share some of our content on your social media for the day. It’s one of several initiatives that form part of our wider Christmas campaign this year.
The power of shared reach – amplifying the message about homelessness
You might wonder, “how can a few social media posts truly make a difference?” The answer lies in the ripple effect of shared reach. The average Facebook user has around 338 friends. Imagine if just a fraction of those friends see your posts about World Homeless Day and our cause. Suddenly, we’re not just reaching hundreds, but potentially thousands.
Why raising awareness is crucial this World Homeless Day
We need money to provide support to people sleeping rough in central London, and that means we have to fundraise from the general public.
There are lots of competing pressures on people’s spare cash, and they won’t part with it unless they understand and believe in our cause, so we have to convince them to help us by showcasing what we do and the positive impacts our work has.
But we need them to know about us and the challenges faced by homeless people in the first place – if they’re not aware of The Connection and the important role we play in supporting rough sleepers, then they can’t possibly give to our fundraising campaigns.
That’s where our social media ‘takeover’ comes in.
How to maximize your impact on World Homeless Day
This last point is perhaps the most important: tagging or @mentioning people is the surest way to make sure your posts are seen by those friends and family members
